A. Responsibilities and Duties: The primary responsibility will be to safely respond in the community, in partnership with a MRT teammate and/or first responders, to provide evidence-based, solution-focused, recovery-oriented interventions at the point of a behavioral health crisis or concern in the community. A good portion of service provision will involve active crisis responses and brief transitional crisis support. Services can be offered through collaborative multidisciplinary, strengths-based, and recovery-oriented approaches.
The PRN Mobile Crisis Specialist serves on the Mobile Response Team within the Crisis Services Division of BNC. The MRT collaboratively responds to a broad range of community needs, including high-acuity individuals and those with complex circumstances, and is responsible for providing mobile and/or on-site behavioral health crisis services to individuals across life stages throughout Douglas County, Kansas. Team members in this position will be adept at providing brief, intensive crisis services to reduce the need for hospitalization, divert from justice system contact, and support efforts to keep service recipients in the community as clinically appropriate.
This role requires the ability to work with severe and persistent mental illness, serious emotional disturbance, and/or substance abuse issues, especially supporting those experiencing a psychiatric crisis; ability to work independently and as a member of a crisis services team; possess demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to react effectively in a variety of human service situations. The PRN Mobile Crisis Specialist will be willing to advocate for the best interests of those receiving services, our crisis services division, and have a strong passion for public service and collaboration.
As a participant in the Overnight PRN MRT Staffing Program, you must be able to work on-call overnight shifts (12:00am to 9:00am), demonstrate flexibility and reliable attendance, and respond in person to referrals within (i.e., under) one hour.
Team members should expect ongoing improvements in processes and procedures as we continually strive to provide the best care. MRT services are in-person and operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Overnight shift coverage will be 9 hours.
MRT Overnight PRN Mobile Crisis Specialist positions are on-call roles with a paid on-call shift rate and an additional rate per deployment/response in the community. These nonexempt positions are not eligible for BNC benefits and are open to both internal and external applicants. Positions will remain open until they are filled.
Scheduling:
- Staff must submit any dates they are unavailable at least one month in advance for the subsequent month's schedule.
- MRT leadership will create the schedule for the following month based on MRT’s 24/7/365 operational needs and staff availability.
Shift Commitment:
- Employees are required to commit to a minimum of six (6) overnight shifts per calendar month.
- Each overnight shift runs from 12:00am to 9:00am, and staff must work the full duration of each scheduled shift.
- Maximum is 79 hours worked per month in a non-full-time role.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- Answer all incoming calls and respond to all referrals received during scheduled on-call shifts promptly and professionally.
- Respond in person to referrals within/under one hour of receiving them.
- Aid access to recommended services and higher levels of care as appropriate, such as inpatient hospitalization, substance abuse services, outpatient therapy, child rehabilitation services, adult rehabilitation services, and psychiatric services.
- Collaborate with BNC MRT colleagues and other outside providers in the coordination of appropriate service and level of care.
- Meet and comply with all administrative and clinical documentation requirements for crisis division staff.
- Meet direct service expectations and comply with other established standards.
- Support the tracking and collection of data as required.
- Attend and actively participate in program staffing and clinical supervision 1x monthly during shift.
- Provide input to supervisors and other treatment team members regarding clinical or program issues.
- Coordinate services between agencies or multidisciplinary providers on behalf of the client.
- All mobile response staff are required to facilitate the transportation of clients to the appropriate level of care.
- Complete and sign progress notes and documentation within 24 hours.
B. Accountability: This position will be directly accountable to the Mobile Response Team Program Managers and will engage in the requisite performance review and evaluation processes as determined by BNC personnel management policy.
C. Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in human services
- Demonstrated knowledge of the theory and practice of human services at the Bachelor's level, preferred having 1 - 2 years' experience working in a social services role.
- Basic knowledge of community mental health services, crisis intervention models, stages of change, and behavioral health concepts and presentation is strongly preferred.
- Ability to provide screening, brief intervention, and referral to services for SUD.
- Team player and invested in supporting clients in crisis.
- The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.
- Must be a resident of Douglas County and be physically located within the county for the entirety of each shift, to meet standards for emergent response (under one hour). This is essential in order to respond in under 1 hour to all deployments in Dg Co.
- Internal BNC applicants must be current BNC employees in good standing. A good reference from their direct supervisor and approval from the division director of their primary assignment is required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable personal vehicle, as staff will be required to respond to referrals in their own vehicles and may be expected to transport clients.
- Must be willing to collaborate and coordinate with local law enforcement/EMS/hospital emergency department/multidisciplinary community partners as appropriate and necessary to coordinate care and ensure a safe environment for the patient and staff providing mental health support and assessment.
- Complete all required training (KS Train, Relias, Basic CPR, First Aid, Safety Deescalation Training) and onboarding within 30 days of hire.
- Establish and maintain a working competency in the management and use of the Center's electronic medical record (EMR) software as demonstrated by timely and accurate documentation of the clinical record.
- Responsibly, professionally, and ethically carry out all job duties with minimal supervision.
- 14. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the job.
- 15. Must be able to achieve, within the first 6 months of employment, a working competency in the management and use of the Center's electronic health records (EHR) software as demonstrated by timely and accurate documentation of the clinical record.
D. Compensation
- On-Call flat Rate: $75 per overnight shift (12:00am–9:00am) for being available and able to respond in under an hour.
- Call-Out deployment Rate: $100 per referral requiring deployment/in-person response.
- *Holiday Coverage: Double pay for both on-call flat rate and deployment rate for shifts worked on holidays.
- I.e. $150$ for on-call flat rate 12:00am-9:00am & $200 per deployment rate.
- Mileage reimbursement is eligible for travel completed in personal vehicles while responding to referrals or transporting clients.
- Applicable shift differentials per policy 601.12 only apply for hours worked while employees are deployed.
- Employees must clock in and out when they are deployed.
Shift differentials are part of supporting Crisis Services’ needs for extended hours of coverage and apply as follows:
Night Shift is defined as any hours worked between 11:00pm and 7:00am.
- - Night shift differential $2.75.
Day Shift is defined as any hours worked between 8:00am–3:00pm.
Evening Shift is defined as any hours worked between 3:00pm–11:00pm.
- - Evening shift differential $2.00.
Weekend shifts are defined as being worked between 11:00 pm Friday and 7:00am Monday.
- -Weekend Day shift differential $2.00.
- -Weekend Evening shift differential $3.25.
- -Weekend Night shift differential $4.00.
