Licensed Practical Nurse

Pay is based on experience within a range of $26.00-$32.00 per hour.  This position is full time, non-exempt, benefits eligible. A.  Responsibilities and Duties:  The primary responsibility of the LPN I is working with children and adolescents in our child and family services department (CFS) to deliver medical services that promote a whole-person, integrated approach to health care. Additional responsibilities may include supporting adult patient services as needed. The LPN is part of a collaborative treatment team, working within the LPN's scope of practice, and program policy. Specific duties include:

1.  Demonstrated ability to identify, triage and prioritize patient interventions on an ongoing, daily basis.

2.  Strong ability to multi-task and shift between tasks as medically.

3.  Medication management: Address patient requests for refills, queue medication orders to the providers for approval.

4.  Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally, and in writing, interventions and care provided to patients.

5.  Clinical documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) is relevant and addresses the interventions in a clear and concise manner.

6.  Monitor patients on medications, including clinical follow-up, vital signs, and lab results as part of the assigned care team.

7.  Fully address patient, family and staff questions or concerns regarding medication side effects, or adverse reactions.

8.  Provide patient education for medications, programs within the department including substance use and medication assisted treatment, as well as tobacco cessation.

9.  Manage and address messages left on the nurse voice line.

10.  Administer intramuscular injections of long-acting psychotropic medications as ordered.

11.  Maintain injection orders, appointments ensuring the medication is on site prior to the patient arriving for their injection.

12.  Work collaboratively with a patient's treatment team, addressing the medical service needs for effective medication management.

13.  Monitor new patient referrals to medication services and notify scheduling.

14.  Deliver reimbursable service compliant with established standards.

15.  Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the job.

16.  Additional responsibilities that may be assigned as circumstances warrant.

B.  Accountability:  The LPN reports directly to the Program Manager of Medical Services.

C.  Qualifications:  The Licensed Practical Nurse position requires:

1.  Completion of the Licensed Practical Nurse Program

2.  Current Kansas licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse

3.  Experience working in the mental health field with children and adolescents.

4.  Knowledge of psychopharmacological interactions.

5.  Physical assessment nursing skills.

6.  Knowledge of psychodynamic approaches, therapeutic processes, and mental/physical disease entities, as well as established brief psychotherapy, group therapy, crisis intervention and psycho-educational group skills and the strong interpersonal skills essential to developing effective relationships with referring members of the medical community.

7.  Exceptional team participation skills.

8.  Strong organizational team skills.

9.  Experience related to design and delivery of managed behavioral health care preferred.

10.  Prior computer experience and basic computer fluency.

11.  An ability to work independently and in cooperation with others.

12.  Strong organizational skills.

13.  Strong oral and written communication skills.

14.  Understand the social determinates of health and their effects on our community.

15.  A commitment to interdisciplinary and community mental health center approaches.

17.  Must be able to demonstrate competency using the electronic health record (EHR) within 3 months of employment. Knowledge of SmartCare is a plus, but not required.  

K.S.A. 1113(d)(2) sets three qualifiers for LPN practice: 1) an LPN must have a supervisor that is an RN, someone licensed to practice medicine and surgery (M.D. or D.O.) or a dentist; 2) an LPN must function in the area of supportive and/or restorative care; 3) an LPN's activities must be based on acceptable educational preparation. If these three criteria are met an LPN may engage in care, nursing diagnosis, treatment, counsel and health teaching, supervision, administration, teaching of the nursing process and execution of the medical regimen. These activities are most often limited by the LPN's educational preparation. Any post basic education obtained can be considered and should meet the industry standard.

Requires pre-employment drug screening, proof of Covid-19 immunization, flu immunization and TB screening prior to starting any position.  All must be completed or in process/scheduled to be cleared for new hire orientation.
